Welcome to NANNY'S PLACE
As with some women, I have
had a fascination with horses and all their related species from a toddler age. I grew up
around the magnificent animals and have owned a few during the years. So it will not
surprise you to know I have an affinity for unicorns.
Unicorns satisfy my
appreciation of the horse's physical attributes as well as the fantasy I indulge in from
time to time. Over the centuries, man has bestowed upon the unicorn a many-faceted
charisma. They stand for purity, truthfulness, tolerance, loyalty and bravery. They say if
a unicorn but touches his horn to a body of water, it will become bereft of all toxins and
poisons. Only a virgin pure of mind, heart and body can capture one of these mythical and
mystical beasts. No wonder we don't ever see these magnificent creatures abroad anymore.
Almost as scarce is the aura of the
American Indian. Foreign groups pushed these proud peoples from their native lands where
they practiced a unique lifestyle very in tune with Mother Nature. Some of these tribes
have even vanished from the land never to be seen again. A deep sorrow dwells in my heart
because of this. But, like the unicorns, the Native Americans are proud entities who
treasure God's gifts to the humans He created. There are many beautiful artifacts and
legends to be shared and appreciated from these People if we only take the time.
So I try to go slower in the real world
these days and stop, look and listen to what may be going on around me. I have a love of
the influence the Native Americans have had on our own culture and try to bring it into my
home. Also while I try to sort out the hassles of everyday life, I sometimes slip into one
of the open valleys of my imagination. There I find the peaceful, powerful, magnificent
unicorns keeping company with all manner of folks. They are all sizes, shapes and colors
and live and share everything around them. Among the sun-drenched plateaus, I find
children (fairy, human, other worldly) playing innocently and unafraid; their laughter
like tiny bells to my ears. Here I can come and rest my weary soul and haggard heart under
a towering oak whose branches reach to the heavens but also bend to the earth. A rich
carpet of verdant green lays beneath me and flowers of every hue and scent are to be seen
throughout.
I would hope that, like this protective
unicorn mare, The Spirit that watches over me, would guard me from all that would prey
upon my weaknesses and vulnerabilities. Remember, do not ever despair. We DO have spirits
(or angels) that watch over us... always. Even as we may dream a dreamless sleep, they are
there.
If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier
in the Spring and stay that way later in the Fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride
more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.

Magical
Creature
Little sprites weaving flowers in your mane;
What is it that you are, do you even have a name?.
Liquid brown eyes gaze softly in the light.
Could I touch you, mount you, ride you if I might?
Garlands of daisies hang sweetly from your coat;
Hair as smooth as satin touch fingers as I stroke.
Fields of buds and clover are the mattress for your bed.
Is that horn you carry so heavy for your head?
Nostrils quiver slightly as the breezes softly sigh;
A world of other creatures are reflected in your eyes.
Little butterflies with elfin hands fly briskly to and fro;
Living in a world with you that I will never know.
Your step is silent as you trod across the stream;
Only to become luminescent in the moon's reflecting beam.
Only good and happy things will happen to you here;
Living in another space where man cannot come near.
